A God Centered Family

Mar 01, 2011 by Dan Triant

The parental role is to love. The child’s role is to honor and respect. This formula of familial roles facilitates an experience of family that is both healthy, and fully supported by the Gospel message of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The most pronounced example of this is celebrated in God Himself. These roles are prolifically witnessed and celebrated during these next two months, as we are shepherded through the season of Great and Holy Lent, Holy Week, and the Pascal Resurection.

The Role of a Child: Honor & Respect Parents

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours”—Luke 22:42

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus Christ prays to God the Father, asking if his forthcoming suffering may be foregone. Although it is Jesus’ own will to avoid such suffering and ultimate crucifixion, in honoring and respecting His Father - He voluntarily submits His own will and desire to the will of His Father.

The Role of a Parent: Love the Child

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.”—John 3:16

The Triune God has such an authentic love for all of His children, which are all of mankind, that it became manifest in His tremendous sacrifice, witnessed in Jesus Christ on the cross - so that we may not be condemned to live forever in brokenness, but be healed through His sacrifice for the sanctification of our souls.

The Fruits of a God-Centered Family Structure

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.”—Luke 24:5

When God-centered familial roles are maintained, the miraculous takes place! Families are healed, healthy relationships are constructed and maintained, and even death is defeated through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!

During this year’s Lenten and Pascal seasons, focus on the perfect example of family that God provides for us. Through His example, and our individual choices to be committed to it, our journey through this most blessed season of the year will blossom into a bliss experienced in all corners of our lives - beginning in our own families! A blessed and productive Lenten and Pascal season to us all!
