Road to the Relic—Living Christian History in Stockton, CA!!!
Jan 31, 2009 by Fr Luke Palumbis
A piece of living Christian history is finding its way to Stockton, California!
Christian worship experience has existed for 2000 years, and for two-thousand years, worshiping in the presence of the bones of saints and martyrs has been Christian practice. From the experience of worshiping in the catacombs among the bones of martyred brothers-and-sisters-in-Christ, to the collection of the bones of martyred Saint Polycarp in the 2nd Century, and throughout the centuries—Christian history, and the tradition of relics, enable us to experience the reality that the Body of Christ is not limited to those still alive in this life, but includes those who have already fallen asleep in the Lord!
The Saint Basil community, the Church in America, and all our neighbors are being blessed by the reception of a Holy Relic of our Patron and Intercessor Saint Basil the Great. Father Luke will be traveling to Greece to receive the Holy relic, a piece of bone from Saint Basil’s body, from a Byzantine established monastery, and bring it back to bless us in Stockton! This trip is taking place Feb 2 - 12. At a date to be announced, Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, will formally present the Holy Relic of our Patron to the community in the coming weeks following Father Luke’s return.
Up-to-date pictures and statements from Father Luke’s trip will be continually posted on the parish website—keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open as this beautiful and blessed piece of living Christian history comes to Stockton, California!
May our Patron and Intercessor Saint Basil the Great intercede for us!
